[2.5] Unveiling the Cosmic Rebels: SEKHMET ๐ฆโค๏ธโ๐ฅ๐๏ธ
We made it to the end of the Unveiling the Cosmic Rebels series! Today Iโm keeping it short and sweet as we ride into the weekend. Hereโs a recap of the Dark Goddesses weโve met this week:
[2.1] Unveiling the Cosmic Rebels: BABA YAGA ๐งน๐ง๐ฝโโ๏ธ๐ฎ๐ณ
THE RADICAL BADDIE archetype is most potently captured by Dark Goddesses across time, space, & culture. Last week we did a deep dive on Kali & ways to work with the Dark Goddess. The word shakti means โpower.โ Shakti, the innate power in reality, has five โfaces.โ It manifests as the power to be conscious, the power to feel ecstasy, the power of will or desire, the power โฆ
[2.2] Unveiling the Cosmic Rebels: PERSEPHONE ๐๐พ๐โ ๏ธ
We continue our journey of honoring the deliciously dual Dark Goddesses from around the world with one of my personal favorites, Persephone from the Ancient Greek tradition. Persephoneโs story is the young, innocent maiden and beloved daughter of Fertility Goddess Demeter and Zeus, the head honcho of the pantheon of Greek gods and goddesses. She embodieโฆ
[2.3] Unveiling the Cosmic Rebels: IXCHEL ๐๐๐๐๐ฏ
Ixchel is the mother of Mayan mythology and revered as a multifaceted goddess. Sheโs likely a composite portrait of many goddesses from the Aztec and Mayan tradition, a lot like the many versions of Shakti weโve explored here. Ixchel then is a glittery kaleidoscope vision of the beauty and multi-facetedness of divine femininity ๐คฉ๐๐โจ
[2.4] Unveiling the Cosmic Rebels: OYA ๐จ๐ช๏ธโ๏ธ
โOya is a no nonsense deity. Never ingratiating, she is the epitome of concentrated intellectual, social, and erotic feminine power. Oyaโs key characteristics โ her being a force of feminine leadership, her restoring balance in society by all means, even, if necessary, by causing anomie. Oya literally translated from Yoruba means โShe toreโ and indeed wโฆ
Theyโre each so incredible, no?! I hope you can begin to see the themes and similarities across these badass Dark Goddesses.
Sooo curious to hear what youโre enjoying most about the publication.
Iโd love to hear from you. Drop a comment or hit reply to this email and say hello!
Today I share the fifth and final (for now) profile of a glorious Dark Goddess to inspire you radical baddies ๐๐
Sekhmet -The Mistress of Dread
The last goddess in our series is Sekhmet from the Egyptian tradition! There are many goddesses in the Egyptian tradition, including Isis the great sorceress and Great Mother archetype. Hathor, the goddess of love and music, was more popular in ancient times. And when she became angry, she became Sekhmet.1
Sekhmet is the Egyptian Goddess of Fire, Hunting, Death, War. She represents both violence and retribution, the chaos of plague and the healing power of medicine. A queen of duality: she both led Pharoahs to war and served as patron saint of physicians and healers. She was invoked to ward off diseases and was known to cause plagues. To me she feels like the necessary misery of a fever - it is the heat which kills the bad foreign bodies and keeps you safe and healthy.
In learning about Sekhmet, I was pleased to see the parallels between Sekhmet and the goddesses who Iโm more familiar with in through my lineage - Kali and Durga. They have the same chaotic Shakti energy, and even have similar stories and symbology.
Like Kaliโs story of emerging through Durgaโs third eye to serve retributive justice, Sekhmetโs mythology describes her as the vengeful manifestation of the sun god Raโs power, sent to destroy mankind because it was not upholding the laws of Maโat, the ancient Egyptian concept of order and justice.2 She is also like Kali when described as having out of hand bloodlust and nearly destroying civilization with her wrath. Sekhmetโs energy reminds me of Durga as well - the warrior goddess, ferocious nature, lion, and the color red are the most important associations of Durgaโs symbology as well.
Invoke Sekhmet for healing, protection, and tenacity. This is a stunning music and mantra meditation Iโve been playing as I wake up in the morning, getting ready to conquer the day. I also love the guidance shared by Okani Luna on Kemetic Spirituality and ways to work with Sekhmet:
When it comes to symbols and associations, they are both symbols you can have on your person to carry the Goddessโs energy and protection with you (think jewelry, talismans, tattoos, etc.) but they also are signs that will show up in your dreams and daily life. Keep an eye out for the symbols and messages the pantheon of Dark Goddesses might be sending you ๐
Associations:
Lions
Sun
Arrows
Red Linen
Serpent
Offerings: Beer, Incense, Gold
